Prabhas as Lord Ram in Adipurush – a performance that sparked mixed reactions across India.

When the creators behind Adipurush released the official statement on the sequel to the film, it did not take the tunnel of the internet long to blow up.

However, this was not the usual Bollywood buzz. The news was received with laughter, memes, and the most general gasp of a dejected fanbase.

A Flashback to the First Failure

Adipurush released in 2023, was projected as a revolutionizing cinematic experience aiming to present the great Indian epic- Ramayan, in a contemporary extreme bigger-than-life manner.

At a 600 crore budget, with Prabhas as Ram and Kriti Sanon as Sita, the fans were positively awaiting beautiful cinematography and heartwarming emotions.

Instead, they were delivered with a flat, out-of-touch adaptation, low-brow VFX and cringe-worthy dialogues, and a depiction much further apart of the spiritual and cultural depth of the initial epic.

The Consequences Were Sudden and Rough

The movie was mocked ruthlessly in various platforms. Audience took it down to pieces, terming Raavan a video game villain, the dialogue as WhatsApp forward.

Even the religious bodies and the scholars of culture stood asking them to be banned and offer their apology on distorting sacred story which has been respected by people of generations.

So What Is The Point In Making Adipurush 2?

That is the big question made by the internet. What would make the film-makers go through a second spell of criticism, outrage, and box office harm?

The answers that might be obtained are varied. Others think it is a redemption bid- the opportunity to correct what went wrong, regain the confidence of the people and serve justice to the story. Others believe it is the mere business greed that takes an advantage of controversy as a matter of attention and curiosity.

Twitter: No One Asked for This

As soon as the news broke, X (previously Twitter) Instagram, and YouTube were overwhelmed with posts with the title of We did not require this sequel.

Hashtags #Adipurush2, #AdipurushReturns, and #WhoApproved were the trending ones in a matter of hours.

Garage parody trailers were made, meme pages recocked older clips and even film critics made open letters to the creators to reconsider. The sense of the tone is obvious: nobody wants to be cheated a second time.

Gold Standard of Ramayan:

Whenever the modern adaptation of Ramayan fails, the classic TV series of 1987, which was produced by Ramanand Sagar, acquires that much more respect.

It was made with a fraction of the budget of Adipurush and no advanced technology to it, and it is still more touching.

It is not only nostalgia. It is the sincerity, the reverence, the story telling. Adipurush is missing that- and what viewers are yet to get.

Will Adipurush 2 Make Up What was Lost?

Technically, yes.

Provided that the team will learn to actually heed the commentary left by the masses, refigurate the script in a meaningful way, bring on board cultural advisors and abstain grabbing at dazzling graphic effects, Adipurush 2 will have a fair chance of changing the tide.

There is no margin of error though. There is skepticism among the audiences. and no money can substitute heart, history and honesty in storytelling.

A Greater Issue With Mythology in Bollywood

This scandal does not involve one movie only; it is rather a sign of a larger-scale problem. The recent interest by Bollywood filmmaking in mythology can be described as profit rather than purpose-based.

Cinema is committing sacrilege with sacred narrations. And so when you do, then the audience that you are trying to excite, is the one to walk out first.

Accountability, not Money

Any film on lord Ram, Sita or Hanuman is not like any other Friday release.

It is a culture duty. These characters are not perceived as fictional by millions of Indians they are perceived as truths.

Unless Adipurush 2 realizes this once again, it will not only prove a film failure, but also become a loss on the cultural front.

Last Reflections: Cautious Curiosity or Rejection by the Crowd?

It is time the ball was in the court of the filmmakers. They will have to redo the same errors, and assume that they will still get people to come with controversy or they can redefine the story using humility, research and much honor.

The internet is watching at this point. And judging. One of the biggest critiques that bollywood will face in the recent future is becoming a redemption arc or a disaster repeat of Adipurush 2.
