Fans have been speculating on Aashiqui 3, the sequel to one of the most beloved romantic franchises in Bollywood, over the years. As rumors of cast changes, script hold-ups, and even musical anticipations flew in the air, the hype never matriculated.
However, with the new film Saiyaara hitting the theatres, there is a new argument in town- is Saiyaara the spiritual successor to Aashiqui 2?
Or has this become the true Aashiqui 3 in disguise?
What was so special about Aashiqui 2?
Aashiqui 2 which came out in 2013 was not just a love story, in fact, it was an emotional roller-coaster filled with pain, passion, and legendary music. Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor now went not only into homes but became household names.
The themes of the broken love, addiction, sacrifice, and desperately trying to show their feeling, which was explored in the film, touched the hearts of the young. One cannot forget about "Tum Hi Ho". An idea of love in a single generation was given by that song alone.
The Vibe of Saiyaara Reminds of the Soul of Aashiqui
In case you have seen the trailer of Saiyaara, you already realize that it is filled with melancholy, desire, and tragic love. It is all heartbreak right there in cinematography, dialogues, and even the background score.
Not an actual part of the Aashiqui series, the somber color, strong romantic chemistry, and lyrical heartbreak, however, assign the Saiyaara a feeling of the unofficial Aashiqui 3.
The characters reflect the suffering of Rahul & Aarohi
In Aashiqui 2 Rahul was a self-destruct artist who fell in love with an upcoming artist. One can encounter such opposite between characters once again although in Saiyaara it is even stronger one character is engulfed with self-struggle the other one strives to make the love not to remain broken.
The familiar thing with this is this recurring theme of love vs personal downfall. It is rough, gritty, and soul-crushing and so is Aashiqui 2.
Music: The Center of the Comparison
Aashiqui was memorable due to music. And Saiyaara does not pull any punches. Its soulful songs, and in particular the title song, have also become viral because they sound painful in a beautiful manner.
Although Saiyaara does not have a chartbuster like Tum Hi Ho, the album has inched its way into the list of every millennial and Gen Z heartbroken user on Spotify.
Direction Style/ Visual Language
Saiyaara visual palette is abundant of rain, dark rooms, lonely roads, and silent gazes. All the Aashiqui trademarks.
Saiyaara, just like Aashiqui 2, is not loud or dramatic and simply shows pain progressively. The chemistry is subdued, storytelling unhurried and the pauses speak volumes more than the dialogs.
Internet Reactions: Aashiqui 3 - Without Saying It aloud
The resemblance to Aashiqui 3 has seen a lot of fans on X (previously Twitter) refer to Saiyaara as the unofficial Aashiqui 3. All over social media, there could be comments such as “Aashiqui 3 we deserved” and “Finally something that feels like love again.”
There is even some grumbling that the movie should have been Aashiqui 3 but because of creative freedom the movie was published as a new one.
Will Saiyaara be the Real Aashiqui 3?
Technically, no. But emotionally? Absolutely.
Though the third iteration of Aashiqui in the form of Aashiqui 3 (starring Kartik Aaryan) is still underdeveloped, Saiyaara has served as the balm. It gives you all that the Aashiqui series portrayed- Tears, love, loss, and the feeling which you would remember long after the ending credits are done playing.
Last Reflections- A Love Story of the Broken Hearted
Even though it might or might not be an official entry in the franchise, Saiyaara offers to viewers just what they were begging to see, a love story, and not the fantastic one but the realistic one. It is painful, it is curing, and it does not leave.
Therefore, perhaps, we do not need an Aashiqui 3 branded. Perhaps, we are already being given closure that we did not realize we are waiting.
